October 19th, in the dark of night, six Ottawa Greenpeace activists plastered downtown Ottawa Thursday with posters to prepare the city for the Boreal Forest Day.
Posters from the kleercut web-page entitled Wanted: Kleenex’ were printed and photocopied by each member. Ottawa has a population of over 275,000 people; many of whom work and walk around downtown everyday of the week.
By placing the posters in strategic locations, Ottawians would clearly see the work of the night Greenpeace group the next morning when they went to retrieve their morning paper. Passers-by, even at night, stopped to ask the activists what they were doing and some took posters as they boarded their buses.
The group worked in two divisions; the punctual group, and the late group. Unfortunately, only the late group remembered their camera, so the photos include only the late group. The punctual group met sharply at 7 pm at the downtown Rideau Centre Food Court to discuss plans for the November 3rd event then headed out, with posters in hand to the main streets. The late group (with the camera) arrived too late to join the first group, but followed the trail of posters they had left behind.
In all, over 130 posters were put up in just over 1 hour. In the end, we were all invigorated and excited to tell others about our success. We e-mailed the rest of the group who quickly responded in kind. Not 5 days later, Devon, a West End Ottawa Activist, took it upon himself to repeat the Ottawa Postering Event as a SOLO ACT putting up 100 posters in 1.5 hours. This is a great activity that any activist can do either together or as a solitary activity to help spread the word.
